Daily Guide for a Balanced Mind

Feeling stressed or uneasy isn’t a good feeling.

We all need tips and tools to live a more balanced life.

Below, I’ve shared 6 of my top tips that can be used each and every day to promote a balanced mind.

1. Good Morning Pause

Give yourself the gift of resisting any urges to check your cell phone, computer, or television in the morning for at least 30 minutes. This morning, a mindful pause will do wonders for your mental state. Enjoy your morning coffee or breakfast, and take an invigorating shower with your favorite citrus aromatherapy. Allow your mind to awaken at its own natural pace.

2. Meal Prep

There’s nothing that creates more stress than making decisions from a stressed mind. Plan out your meals for the day. Choose healthy, balanced, and colorful food. Make sure to eat when you’re hungry. When blood sugar drops, irritability can rise. Keep hydrated, too!

3. Get Outdoors

It’s easy to stay stuck inside, seated, and online for most of the day. Take a mental break and get outside. Allow your mind to explore the world around you — look at the flowers, pet someone’s dog, look out at the sky, and notice the elements of the day. Is it windy, sunny, or warm? Damp or chilly? Connect to the living world beyond yourself, beyond the “I.”

4. Community

We are social beings. Feeling connected to a community is vital for mental health. If you can’t see friends or family, send a text or email to someone whose energy you enjoy. Drop in to say hello or make a plan to meet up. Don’t underestimate chatting with a neighbor or a barista — remember, we all want to feel connected and less alone.

5. Movement

Movement of any kind is gold. Walk, run, swim, dance, shake, stretch. Let your body use up any leftover cortisol by exercising. Choose something you already love to do and engage your whole body while doing it. You’ll reap the benefits during and after, which will help settle your energy from the day.

6. Evening Ease

When it’s time to unwind, try low-stimulating activities. For instance, practice restorative yoga, listen to a relaxing guided meditation, or give yourself a massage. Now think of your environment: is your bedroom tidy and stress-free? Can you dim the lights? Make some chamomile tea. For sleep hygiene purposes, it’s best to be tech-free for at least one hour prior to bedtime.
